Why Stretch Goals?

Stretch goal is an objective that cannot be achieved by incremental or small improvements but require extending oneself to the limit to be actualized. it is a challenge that is significantly beyond the organization's current performance level.

Stretch goals energize and push you to work harder at meeting more difficult targets and to achieve more than if you had set an easier goal.

Be Different and Make a Difference!

When you set a stretch goal for yourself you know that you may not meet it 100%, but by coming close you will likely achieve extraordinary results.

Say, if you set the goal to "120," essentially asking an extra 20% of yourself, and achieve "115", you have managed to achieve 15% more than if you had set an easier goal.

The term "stretch goals" was coined by Jack Welch, the former legendary CEO of GE, to denote those objectives that are seemingly unattainable with present resources and, most importantly, mindset. By the specifying the "attainable", people are required to think outside the box and be able to improve performance by magnitude they had never thought possible.

Case in Point  25 Lessons from Jack Welch

Jack Welch urged everybody at GE to stretch.  "We have found that by reaching for what appears to be the impossible, we often actually do the impossible; and even when we don't quite make it, we inevitably wind up doing much better than we would have done."

Stretch yourself. "Don't be satisfied with the best you can now and the best you think you can do. The higher you aim, the more you are likely to achieve. Back up your stretch goals with ambitious self-development to ensure complete success. Develop self-motivation by reaching for the skies."... More
