Motivational Triggers

Motivational triggers are stimuli (internal or external) that prompt action, boost drive, and change behavior by tapping into core needs like autonomy, competence, and purpose.

Motivational triggers that act as catalysts include curiosity, rewards, risks, challenges, threats, goals, desire, praise, recognition, and competition.

For instance, opportunities for learning, feeling valued, and having control over one's work can serve as effective motivators for those who value growth and autonomy. Status, power, affiliation, and care for others can trigger motivation of those who are driven by social and/or professional considerations.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivational Triggers

Motivational triggers can be
intrinsic (internal) and extrinsic (external).

Intrinsic motivational triggers are driven by personal passion, curiosity, a sense of purpose, or the desire for mastery.

Extrinsic motivational triggers are driven by rewards, recognition, feedback, or fear of consequences.

How to Use Self-Motivational Triggers

Identify Your Core Needs: Recognize if the blocker is lack of skill (needs a facilitator) or lack of desire (needs a spark).

Use Active Questioning: Ask yourself, "Did I do my best to progress towards my goal? What could I do better?" to maintain daily focus.

Align with Your Values: Connect tasks to personal life vision and long-term goals to spark internal drive.
