Values-based Leadership:

Management by Consciousness

Management by Consciousness & The Eastern Philosophy

Values-based Spiritual Management and It's Roots in the Eastern Philosophy

By Anastasia Bibikova

"The conditions under which men live upon earth are the result of their state of consciousness; to seek to change the conditions without changing the consciousness is a vain chimera."  – The Mother

Eight Core Beliefs1

  1. The key is within! You can do nothing with others unless you are able to do it with yourself

  2. Technology makes things possible, but it is the people who make it happen

  3. It is not so much the act that matters, but the consciousness in which it is done.

  4. It is only in tranquility and peace that one can know what is the best thing to do

  5. All that is external is the reflex of the inner condition. “On inner values hangs the outer plan.”

  6. Consciousness is not like skills or technology which may be borrowed or imparted ready-made

  7. Intellect can go to moon, but only with the heart one can conquer the world

  8. Working with consciousness – is purifying yourself. Purifying means constant change and improvement

Three Steps to Management by Consciousness

  1. Formulating attitude to business

  2. Humanizing the organization

  3. Interiorizing the management

Four "HOW TOs"

  1. Concentration

  2. Stepping back

  3. Self-introspection

  4. Brain-stilling

Eight-Points Program to Management by Consciousness

  1. Study every employee silently to learn his talents and untapped potential. Attempt to upgrade every employee to his maximum potential.

  2. Note simple avoidable sources of friction between employees and remove them by own initiative. Avoid straight criticism – it is like hitting a man on the heard with a hammer. Propose just feedback, not critique

  3. Set all machinery and physical paraphernalia in perfect order. Even physical things need consciousness approach

  4. Examine every system and subsystem to see what is glitching

  5. Try to establish positive atmosphere in your office – by organizing the working-space. Remember that every trifle is meaningful (the good thing is implementation of Fen-Shui technique)

  6. Work to remove distrust and secrecy among the members of organization

  7. See all outer events as reflections of inner organizational climate. A “sign” can be everywhere

  8. In case of difficulty ask everyone to use his/her own consciousness approach and try to solve the problem together

New Management Model  (45 slides)

Why Management by Consciousness?

The old traditional ways of managing not longer work and will never work again. The old management practice has been erected on the assumption of human limitations as a basis for organizing.

In the new era of world development the key components of the management paradigm has become  vision lending much-needed boundaries of organizations to evolve, values and beliefs deeply implemented in the nature of organizational culture and human skills of the manager himself. The question is: how can one motivate people, reach out for the company development and be an effective leader without being a leader to oneself?

What is Management by Consciousness?

The concept of Management by Consciousness, like such concepts and philosophies as  Kaizen , Integral Yoga, Buddhism,  Zen, Confucianism & Taoism, has come from the East. It argues that there can be no planning, no productivity, no management or sunrise of universal wellbeing without the readiness of the people to work with a sense of common aims, a perceived sense of common direction and a converging feeling of total dedication and higher consciousness. The central idea – is Self and Self-management as an essential step to the new management era.

The Consciousness approach includes:

  • Aspiration

  • Concentration

  • Introspection

  • Within-to-without principle

Aspiration. All the decisions should be taken with intense aspiration, deepest devotion and perfect objectivity. The choice based on inner being will determine the externalities to achieve the goal

Concentration. By concentration one can peep into oneself inner being and discover its fullness and beauty. To reach the right solution one must retire for a while in perfect peaceful silence when he can identify with the problems, search for alternatives and reach the solutions. Use the “Room of silence”.

Self-Introspection. The main principle is: SEARCH YOURSELF FIRST. The best protection from conflicts and tense building relationships with people is a sincere examination of your inner world. Consult your consciousness and apply objectivity to it. Develop the golden attitude: Others can be right and I can be wrong!

Three Steps to Management by Consciousness

1. Formulating attitude to business

2. Humanizing the organization

3. Interiorizing the management

Attitude to business. While planning for the business and processing its operations one should define his/her own attitude to business. One should answer the question: What kind of values prevail in my attitude to organization (individual or organizational)?

Humanizing the organization. We are living in a changing, faster-paced, more perplexing world – one in which educational backgrounds, needs, desires and attitudes to work have changed. Changing the ways that you work with people of your workplace and establishing a new people partnership environment will take time, patience and commitment to make the shift that is needed in this key element of your new management model. But making that shift is worth the trouble that's involved.

Interiorizing the management. Modern management paradigm is an exercise in harmonizing men, material and methods towards the fulfillment of goals leading to human development, social benefit and global welfare.  In such circumstances MAN and people relations have become the basis of management scheme. Man has high potential for superlative performance. The deal is to open that potential. How one can do it? Each of us is a complex entity. The difficulty arises because each part wants to affirm itself without regard to the claims of the others. To coordinate and harmonize different pulls in ourselves is a must for the enduring success. This is the essence of self-management.

Brain-storming vs. Brain-stilling

Brainstorming is a scheme of loud-thinking amongst experts to find a creative solution to a problem. But right and rational decisions cannot be taken in a state of turmoil when mind are overtaken by “heat”. Brain-storming is a best system for discovering alternatives. And brain-stilling – is a optimum scheme  for choosing the decision from the variants suggested. Still your mind first, listening to the silence around (for example, in the “Room of silence”) then try to find the same silence inside you. Try to concentrate on your heart beating, exscinding all the outer sounds. Or listen to your breath – try to follow each flow of air with all your attention. This is a practice of meditation and Integral Yoga.
